Places to Visit
- Places to visit in Swansea
- Gower Peninsula, Area of Outstanding Beauty
- Gower Coast Path. Full length takes for normal hikers 3 - 4 days. If you want to walk one segment - the closer to Rhossili the better it becomes, but all parts are very beautiful. The last segment will most likely become the excursion, so choose earlier segments.
International Travel
- Please note that EU, EEA or Swiss citizens need to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation prior to entering the UK. See as well Guidance for Visiting the UK as an EU, EEA or Swiss citizen. Here are the Rules for entering the UK for more information.
- Despite the availability of cheap air travel, rail remains a viable choice for reaching the UK from many destinations in northern Europe. For originating travel destinations beyond northern Europe, air travel remains the most viable option. If flying is unavoidable, air travellers are encouraged to limit their carbon footprint through their choice of fare class, route and airline and to consider whether more value can be obtained from the visit eg spending a little longer in the UK to meet others/carry out collaborative research. We offer a variety of guidances below to help in minimising the amount of air travel.
- Taking the Eurostar to London is very easy from many places in northern or western europe, from there you take the London Underground to Paddington station and it is a single train to Swansea.
- Heathrow Airport is probably most commonly used airport from Swansea.
- The easiest way to get to Swansea/Bay Campus is to use National Express (direct connection), Megabus, or Flixbus to Swansea.
- If you prefer to travel by train you can take
- Elizabeth line to Hayes & Harlington, then change for the Elizabeth line to Reading, and then take the mainline trains to Swansea. To see this option you need to choose on the Train journey planner (Journey planner rail) the option "avoiding London" (go for advanced search and look for "Route via/avoid" and then avoid London)
- More expensive, and sometimes a little bit faster, although in many cases you save only a few minutes: Heathrow Express to London Paddington and then (usually direct) train to Swansea (Journey planner rail)
- Bristol Airport [e.g. Easyjet].
- Easiest way to get to Swansea/Bay Campus: Flixbus (direct connection from Bristol Airport to Swansea/Bay campus) or National express bus (change at Cardiff).
- You can also take the bus to Bristol Temple Meads (Timetable Bus) and then the train to Swansea (Journey planner rail), usually with change at Cardiff Central.
- Cardiff Airport [e.g. KLM, closest to Swansea]
- You can travel to Swansea via either train or bus.
- There is a shuttle bus to Rhoose Cardiff Airport station (Shuttle bus timetable) with trains to Swansea (Journey planner rail)
- There is as well a bus to Cardiff Central (Bus timetable) from which you can take the train to Swansea (please check an online map such as Google maps for how to get from the bus stop to Cardiff Central; Journey planner rail)
- Alternatively, you can take a bus to the Cardiff Coach Station - Sophia Gardens (travel planner) and then the National express bus to Swansea
- Gatwick Airport (a bit longer journey but still well connected)
- You can take train either via London or (usually cheaper and less stressful) a train which goes to Reading and from there change to Swansea (National Rail Journey Planner; for getting connection avoiding London use advanced search and choose "Route via/avoid" and then avoid London)
- You can take as well National Express, Megabus, or Flixbus to Swansea. (Possibly directly from Gatwick Airport to Swansea - this is quite a long journey, but usually much cheaper).
- Other London Airports (Stansted, Luton, London City Airport, London Southend Airport)
- Usually need to go from there to London
- Typically quite a long journey (but you might get some cheaper tickets).
- From Stansted there are direct coaches to Heathrow where you can change for coaches to Swansea.
- Swansea Airport is only usable for private planes at the moment (we had visitors coming that way).
- There are several routes from the Continent to the UK.
- Ferry to Portsmouth from north of France (e.g. Caen, St Malo, Cherbourg, Le Havre)
- Reasonably good train connection from Portsmouth via Cardiff to Swansea.
